Fleas aren't just annoying, they're also bad for your health, and the health of your pets.

Fleas are external parasites. These miniscule insects feed off of the blood of birds and mammals. They normally feed on the blood of animals, but they can also feed on the blood of humans. Your home may become infested with fleas if your pet brings these parasites indoors. Fleas are small and can easily hide in upholstery, so you may not be aware of their presence until the infestation has grown large in size. They travel by jumping from one person or animal to another. You might notice your pets scratching more than usual, or you may be bitten by fleas as well. Animals infested with fleas are also more susceptible to tapeworms, as some species of tapeworm use fleas as their hosts. Because of their unique shape, and flat armored bodies, they are nearly impossible to crush.

Unlike mosquito bites, flea bites on humans are usually located on the lower legs and feet. The bites are characterized by red spots surrounded by red halos. Additional symptoms of a flea bite may include:

1. Hives
2. A rash
3. Swelling around the bite

Ticks tend to be carriers of various serious diseases, which they may transmit to the people and pets they bite.

Ticks can attach themselves to your pets, especially dogs. Since ticks are usually small, it can be hard to see them on your body or in your pet’s fur. Ticks move quickly across the body, but they prefer warm and moist areas. Tick infestations can occur when just one tick is brought into the home. The tick will attach itself somewhere on your body and bury it’s head into your skin.
