DIY Ant Control Tips and Methods

Ant Bait

One proven method is using ant bait (liquid or gel) strategically placed in areas where ants are commonly seen. This type of bait contain a sweet liquid that attracts the ants, which then carry it back to their colony, effectively eliminating the entire population.

Baking Soda

Baking Soda mixed with Powdered Sugar in equal parts, and thoroughly mixed together also works as a crude bait. The sugar attracts ants, and the baking soda kills ants.

Boric Acid

Additionally, boric acid mixed with sugar significantly disrupts ant communication pathways when used as a homemade bait paste – another useful option for controlling ant infestations.

Cinnamon

You can try using cinnamon essential oil, diluted in water (1/2 teaspoon of essential oil to one cup water) as a spray, or soaking cotton balls with the solution, & placing them along where ants have been trailing.

Coffee Grounds

Coffee grounds also have a strong odor that can deter ants, and can be sprinkled in the areas where ants have been seen in order to throw off their trail, but much like with cinnamon, this can be messy.

Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous earth can also be used as a way of combating ants that have gotten into your home, as the miniscule grains are sharp, and cause microscopics cuts to their exoskeleton, which causes them to rapidly lose moisture, and dehydrate to death.

Essential Oils

Other essential oils have also been found helpful in some cases, and can be used in the same fashion if you have them on hand. Among them are: peppermint, tea tree, clove, or orange oils.

Lemon

Sometimes lemon juice, and lemon peels have been helpful in deterring ants, as the juice can mask the ants’ pheromone trail that they use to navigate their way, and the acidic oils in lemon peels are toxic to ants.

Common Types of Ants

01

Argentine Ant

The most common species we encounter. Invasive, and displace other species. Kill other insects, invade dwellings, and do not sting. Typical argentine ant colony can be millions strong, with multiple queens.

02

Odorous House Ant

Can build large colonies, but tend to stay in colonies of several thousand, the winged reproductive males and females emerge between May through July. Prefers sweets, but will feed on dead insects, and grease

03

Little Black Ant

Often, colonies can be as small as a couple thousand, with two or more queens. These small ants do have a stinger, but rarely sting. They usually nest in decaying wood outdoors, but can nest in soil or voids.

04

Pharoah Ant

These tiny ants are notoriously difficult to control, because of their tendency to splinter into smaller colonies periodically, or when a threat is perceived. Spraying these ants can actually make the problem worse!

05

Pavement Ant

Often mistaken for the argentine, this ant is found foraging mostly at night, but in Spring, and early Summer, will forage during the day. These ants, like the argentine are also often found inside homes.

06

Carpenter Ant

These ants chew wood, and then spit it out, but tend to stick to wet, decaying wood. They can be difficult, and challenging to get rid of, as the queens can live for up to 25 years!

07

Bigheaded Ant

Outdoors, they feed on a variety of arthropods, and insects, and when they enter homes, tend to gravitate toward the kitchen. Large populations of insects attract these ants. These ants do not sting.

08

Crazy Ant

Given the name because they move in an erratic, zigzag pattern, these ants are versatile, and can live in moist or dry habitats, but do not do well in colder climates. They will tend to go indoors when the weather gets cold.

09

Harvester Ant

These ants nest outdoors, and feed on seeds, and dead insects. They mate when they swarm in late summer, and after the mate, the male dies, and the female detaches her wings, and goes underground to lay her eggs.
